Welcome to XDA-Developers.com
This site is mostly about certain PDA-phones. Many are made by a firm called HTC, but we've recently started discussing some made by other manufacturers. The phones have codenames like 'Wallaby', 'Himalaya', 'Blue Angel', 'Wizard' and 'TyTN', but almost nobody knows them by those names. They are sold through mobile operators that give them their own names. We got our first such phone as 'XDA', hence the name of this site.
Since we developed software for these phones, we needed very specific technical information. When we started xda-developers, neither Microsoft, nor the manufacturers, nor the mobile operators seemed eager or even willing to give it to us. So we 'reverse-engineered' the devices, found a lot of information, and shared it with the world. But as our site grew we realised that lots of ordinary users were also suffering from a lack of support. They started using the xda-developers forum to communicate and before long the forum was as much a user forum as it was a developer forum.
Other years, we've grown. Oh my have we grown. In fact we're still growing like crazy: this is now one of the larger systems of its kind on the internet.
Anyway.... We hope that you will enjoy this site and find it as useful as we do. If you do, we encourage you to donate money, write (more) cool software for mobile devices or simply tell everyone this place is the best.
[APP] 6.5.X Taskbar Launcher
RAMMANN has made a nice replacement for the 6.5.X notifications.
Instead of getting the notifications when tapping the topbar, a bar will appear in the same style from which you can launch your own apps.

It's a little tool that shows a customizeable launch pad when you hit the taskbar. If you don't like this launch pad you can also launch something else instead. You can also say to launch nothing at all --> this also disables HTC Notification, Samsung notification if you're on OMNIA, or the annoying taskbar from newer 6.5.x builds.

Windows Mobile Threaded SMS Skins by Astronaut
In the never ending quest to modify and personalize your Windows Phone, the question arises, how far do you want to go?
User Astronaut believes it shouldn't stop at the layout and graphics of your threaded SMS screen. So he created two skins, that give the SMS view a true overhaul.

This particular thread by yxyn proved very promising with regard to the old ugly standard Windows Mobile threaded SMS window.
So, I decided to dig a bit deeper and take it to the next level. After my initial proof-of-concept, the many questions received, and the subsequent improvement of the concept, time has come to release my skin to the public.
What does it do?
It modifies certain files with regard to the standard SMS chat window, enhancing its looks.
Why? Is it necessary?
Yeah, duh! See the repulsive centre image above!
What enhancements does it bring?
First of all, and most notably, it adds a top bar with the receiver’s contact picture and his or her name, which remains on top while scrolling through the messages. Secondly, a bunch of images and a different colour scheme give it a new look. Currently, I have two flavours: a Manila / Sense mimicked skin and a Windows 7 inspired one. It works both in landscape and portrait mode.
Any requirements?
Yes sir! Because threading is only supported in WM 6.1 versions and higher, it is only available for 6.1, 6.5 and 6.5.x roms. Use the right version for your device, else it will probably mess up your device.
All resolutions are supported (hopefully) and probably all devices too.

HTC Rome specifications sheet leaked
Just got my hands on the HTC Rome spec sheets as you can see below 
The HTC Rome seems to be featuring a 1Ghz CPU, a 2.8" QVGA touch screen, HSDPA/UMTS and GSM/GPRS/EDGE (quad band) connectivity.
The spec sheets also mention consumer e-mail under applications, we can't spot a hardware keyboard, but the touch screen could easily feature a qwerty keyboard.
The platform seems to be HTC's own.
We're hoping for more news on this device!

The built-im FM player - at least on HTC HD - misses many features i'd like to have in a FM radio. PowerRadio delivers many data available via RDS which would otherwise be invisible to the listener. Here are just a few examples:
- Radiotext: contains information broadcast by the respective station. What you get here totally depens on the broadcaster. You might see title and interpret, call-in numbers, SMS trafficservice numbers, URL's etc.
- traffic announcements, program type, coverage area, date, time, timezone, various status flags You can find the application thread here

Symbian is Officially Open Source
Mr_stickz posted a message yesterday that points to a rather interesting turn of events in the mobile community, Symbian is now an Open Source OS! Will this benefit Windows Mobile and Android users in any way? It just might, if enough development efforts (and interest) are put into this.

wBubbleWrap 1.0
It's Friday, and you're probably counting down the hours until the weekend starts.

This is only a proof-of-concept and I won't develop it further because I don't use BG4all myself. But my hope is that the basic concept will be helpful to others, and that it will develop from there.
Traditionally the mod is made by moving the "HomeBackgroud" instance from home.mode9 to manila.mode9. The problem with this is that those are 2 of the most important mode9 files in manila, so they are also needed for a lot of other manila mods.
The result of this is that other mods now have to be made in 2 version: one with bg4all and one without. Also, if a new manila build changes one of the mode9s, the bg4all mod needs to be remade.
A different way of doing it is thought the lua scripts. Specifically only one script needs to be modified to make bg4all: homebackground.luac.
This way no mode9 files are modified so bg4all can be compatible with a lot of other mods. This way mods don't have to be redone to include bg4all.
I've included the lua source of the modified homebackground.luac for manila 2.5 with comments about what’s been changed, but you can also compare it to the original to get a better idea. At the bottom is a ready-made cab with bg4all for manila 2.5. You can read more here

RyanMogul6800 has created a Hybrid version of Arcsoft MMS composer to support MMS as well as pictures and video.

The only bug I couldn't eliminate is if you try and forward a video message sent or received using a NON pics/video version of Arcsoft (MMS) using this version it will say it cannot. But it will save it in your drafts in which you can open it and send it from there.
1: If you are able to uninstall your old version of Arcsoft you should do so before installing this CAB. Otherwise my CAB is set up to delete the registry settings for Arcsoft for you.
2: Install my Security Policy Lifter CAB (you may or may not need this depending on the ROM you use) and reboot your device.
3: Now choose a CAB to install your options are below. Obviously reboot your device after installation.

Export-Studio [V3.1]
Cyclonezephyrxz7 created a great application, it's a very useful free alternative to those expensive Contact backup applications. It will backup and export your Contacts and SMS messages.

To Install:
Simply download the CAB file, and install it

Make sure to ONLY PUT THE FOLDER in the folder text box, or you will get errors or weird results...
Once set up, click export, and the application will do its thing!
If you want to use the command-line feature, then just run the same EXE as for the GUI with parameters afterwards (see documentation) You can find the application here

Non-HTC forums now available at xda-developers.com!
As most of you know XDA has historically been an HTC-only site. But due to overwhelming requests from our users, and the fact that there are a lot of really interesting non-HTC Android and Windows Mobile devices out there nowadays, this has changed.
We’ve begun by adding a small selection of new non-HTC devices to the site. This first phase is complete, and we now have forums for the Acer Liquid S100, neoTouch S200, Toshiba TG01, and the Samsung Omnia 2009 devices. Depending on how the activity fairs in these new forums, we may or may not continue this roll out.
We hope you enjoy using the new forums. If there are any developers out there that are willing to step forward to help develop for these new devices, I’m sure that the community would be highly appreciative.

EatMemory - Memory Testing Tool
Recently the actual amount of memory available on the Touch HD2 has been sprouting discussion amongst its users.
User Sc4Freak has created EatMemory.
A small application that allocates all available memory to itself to test the max amount of memory you can pull out of your HD2.

- This application does not use .NET, and instead uses the direct low-level kernel memory management functions (VirtualAlloc and VirtualFree) to reserve, commit, and free virtual pages. This means that the application has much more precise control over memory, and can consume memory until only a couple of megabytes remain.
- This application verifies the memory it allocates, by writing a byte pattern to the memory, and reading it out again. This is necessary because the Windows CE kernel does not commit pages to physical memory unless the memory page is read/written from at least once. This also guarantees that the memory is, in fact, usable and valid.
The attached zip file includes an executable file and source code (C++, requires Windows Mobile 6 SDK).

[APP]Birthday SMS Updated v0.5(29th Jan) (Autosend)
Mohitsapru has created a birthday application that automatically sends a user configurable sms on someone's birthday, the application has been updated to v0.5.
After going through this forum i decided to build this app.
this app is still a beta.
This basically allows a user to set up time when the device will wake up and check if there are any bdays(after 2 hrs) and if there is then it will send a user configurable message to that contact.
This app also allows the user to add all his contacts bday from contact list to the calendar as an appointment.
NOTE: This app will send messages to only those contacts who have been added thru this app.
Steps to use it:
1. Go to options and add contact Bdays.
2. Set a generic BDay wish message.
3. Set the scheduler default is 00:00Hrs
4. Options-> save and exit.
How It works:
1> Select all the Bday from the contacts in outlook contacts and add those in the calendar as an appointment.
2> User configures a birthday message to be sent thru the SMS to the BDay BOY/GIRL.
3> Select a scedule time at which the app will run and check if there are any bdays to be wished. (threshold time is 2hrs). This is done by creating a notification to save memory and battery.
4> After checking for any bdays the app will reschedule it self for the next day at the same time.
5> If there are bday in calendar it will send a SMS to that contact with ur wish message. You can find the application thread here

Member amirdt has created a finger friendly shopping list application. It's also nice to look at and it's devided into clear categories.
