The Always on display feature has been a part of Android phones for a long time now. It was first introduced by Samsung, but many have followed since then. You even get it on a lot of mid-range phones now, which is great. This feature, in case you don't know, shows the clock and some other useful information on your phone's screen all the time. It essentially takes advantage of the OLED panels on phones these days to light up only pixels needed to show you the clock and other notifications, while keeping the rest of the display completely off. So there's no significant impact on the battery life, even when the display is technically "always on" to show you relevant info.

Always-on Display has been a feature on several smartphones for a long time. Ironically, OnePlus devices never had a proper AOD implementation until the release of OxygenOS 11. The company, however, decided not to include this popular feature in the first Android 11-based Open Beta builds for the OnePlus 7 and 7T series that were released last week. According to the changelog, the feature is still under internal testing and it will be released in a subsequent Open Beta update for the OnePlus 7/7 Pro and the OnePlus 7T/7T Pro.

OnePlus briefly introduced an Always-on Display (AOD) feature on the initial factory firmware of the OnePlus 6, but decided to remove it later due to battery concerns. Fans have been clamoring for the feature to make a return, and the company had recently confirmed that they will finally bring back the fan-favorite Always on Display mode to OxygenOS, but gave no concrete timeline as of yet. As expected, XDA community came to the rescue, as XDA Recognized Developer Quinny899 has published OPAodMod, an Xposed Module that provides a Google Pixel-esque AOD feature to OnePlus phones.

Over the past years, Always On Display features have gained popularity with several OEMs as one of the alternative solutions to deliver the functionality that notification LEDs would have otherwise delivered. On OnePlus devices, however, there is no Always On Display feature. Instead, the OEM prefers to use its own implementation that comes in the form of Ambient Display. Ambient Display lights up when you get new notifications or when you tap the screen, but offers very limited functionality. OnePlus AOD DoubleTap Mod aims to fix some of the annoyance from the lack of functionality by offering an easier and quicker transition to the lockscreen.

Even though the idea remains the same, the implementation of AODs differ between OEMs, with a lot of users preferring the Google Pixel implementation. aodNotify toggles the AOD when you get a new notification on Samsung Galaxy phones

There are a few reasons why someone might not want to pick up a Galaxy S10 or other Galaxy phone off the shelf. There are some complaints that the general Android community has about the devices, but one considerable reason for not picking them up, at least for me personally, is the lack of a notification LED.

The OnePlus 6T is a truly outstanding device in more than a few ways. The latest OnePlus flagship features a large 6.41-inch 19.5:9 Optic AMOLED display with a "teardrop" style screen notch and an in-display fingerprint scanner. It also has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, up to 8 GB of RAM, up to 256 GB of storage, a dual rear camera setup, and more. But one feature that is sorely lacking on the OnePlus 6T is an always-on display. While OnePlus has valid reasoning for this, it's a feature the OnePlus 6T is completely capable of having. The OnePlus 6 initially shipped with the feature, but it was removed in the first update.

When you double tap the screen while locked, it will show the Always-on Display for 30 seconds.

Unfortunately, Google didn't backport the feature officially to the first generation of Pixels from 2016, probably for the power inefficiency reasons. But we have some good news for you: you can now enable Always on Display on the Google Pixel and Pixel XL. I've tested the method myself and it worked without any problems. XDA Senior Member shagbag913 released a Magisk module which does exactly that, so you need root. If you already have it, you can follow this tutorial:

Ambient Lock Screen Music is a Root App that Shows any Music on the Pixel 2's Ambient Display
A new root app called Ambient Lock Screen Music shows any music currently playing on your Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL's ambient display.
Google's latest Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL flagships have an awesome new feature called "Now Playing." Using a combination of software, hardware, and machine learning, the Pixel 2 uses an offline database to identify tens of thousands of songs playing in the background. It then displays those songs on your device's lock screen, always on display, or as an ongoing notification. The feature sounds gimmicky on paper, but after using it myself I found that it works really well. That being said, this kind of feature isn't everyone's cup of tea, so XDA Recognized Contributor Quinny899 came up with an app called Ambient Lock Screen Music which allows you to display the name and artist of any currently playing song on your device where the Now Playing text would normally appear.

Always on Display is a nifty feature available in flagship Samsung phones, and finally on the new Google Pixel 2/2 XL. Introduced on the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, Always on Display takes advantage of the AMOLED screen to light up parts of the screen with a clock or other widget without having a noticeable impact on battery life. Samsung states that Always on Display is limited to newer Samsung phones (like the aforementioned S7 series and the Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+, and Note 8) due to hardware optimizations necessary for battery life, but that doesn't mean other Samsung devices can't enjoy the feature.
