Linux on DeX on Samsung Galaxy Note 9
Samsung ends Linux on DeX beta with the Android 10 update

Samsung has sent an email to participants in the Linux on DeX beta program, explaining that the Android 10 update will kill the feature.

DeX is a feature on the Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Tab S series that differentiates Samsung’s flagship smartphones and tablets from the company’s competitors. DeX, which debuted back in 2017 with the Samsung Galaxy S8, lets users access a desktop mode UI, with support for Android apps, when connected to a monitor. Initially, DeX required a special accessory in the form of the DeX Station and later the DeX Pad, but with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, Samsung made it work with any HDMI to USB Type-C cable, which means that it no longer required any specialized hardware. This significantly improved its versatility. The one real competitor to Dex is Huawei’s Easy Projection feature, which can also work wirelessly. However, Samsung still had a leg up over Huawei thanks to the Linux on DeX feature.

Hands-on with Linux on Samsung DeX for the Samsung Galaxy Note 9

Linux on Samsung DeX lets you use Ubuntu 16.04 on the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and Samsung Galaxy Tab S4. But how good is it?

When Samsung DeX first launched with the Samsung Galaxy S8, I questioned the usefulness of it. Nearly 20 months and 3 flagship Galaxy launches later, some people still question how functional DeX can be. To make DeX more useful for professionals and developers, Samsung announced Linux on DeX back at SDC 2017 to improve the desktop experience with access to new apps. Now that Linux on DeX is finally in beta for the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and Samsung Galaxy Tab S4, I got to take it for a spin to see how it works. Linux on DeX is a legitimate desktop experience running on a phone.

Samsung DeX is Samsung's desktop experience based on Android that appears when you connect your Galaxy S8, Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S9, or Galaxy Note 9 to a monitor. It allows for multiple windows and apps to be open at once with a special UI designed for a larger desktop screen. Samsung Experience 10 based on Android Pie is almost here for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 and comes with a whole slew of new features. Dockless DeX from the Galaxy Note 9 is one of those new features being brought to the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Samsung Galaxy S9+. This means that all you need is a simple HDMI to USB Type-C cable to use Samsung DeX.

Samsung DeX may support wireless connections in the future

With the Galaxy Note 9, you no longer need a dock to use Samsung DeX. Apparently, Samsung is already working on making the feature wireless.

Samsung DeX is the company's platform for transforming mobile devices into a desktop-like interface. It was originally kicked off in 2017 with the Samsung DeX Pad and DeX Station, which are expensive accessories that connect your phone to a larger display. With the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, they removed the requirement to use the docking pad. All you need is an HDMI adapter. In the future, you may not even need that.

Samsung launched Samsung DeX with the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. It was what Samsung believed to be the future of the mobile workstation, but it was pretty much a flop. Not very many people used DeX because the station was too expensive and inconvenient. Samsung is looking to make up for that with the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. Our source is saying that you will be able to use DeX without a special DeX Station or DeX Pad. All you will need is a USB Type-C to HDMI adapter. WinFuture was able to corroborate this information first.

At the 2017 Samsung Developer Conference, Samsung made a lot of important announcements. The company announced Bixby 2.0 with smart home and third-party developer support and announced a partnership with Google to bring ARCore on some Samsung Galaxy smartphones. However, the announcements don't end there. Samsung also unveiled updated to Samsung DeX with the addition of "Linux on Galaxy", a feature which could add more value to the fledgling state of DeX and pulls more developers into buying Samsung hardware.
