Magic UI 4.0 is the next major update to Honor’s UX, which in turn builds upon the changes and improvements that Huawei undertakes for EMUI 11. The EMUI 11 update is already available on a handful of Huawei smartphones via the stable channel, meaning Honor devices are ready to board the update train as well. In a bid to deliver the latest software experience to legacy devices, the Chinese OEM is now rolling out the Magic UI 4.0 update to the Honor 20, Honor 20 Pro, and the Honor View 20 across the globe.

The company has managed to stick to the schedule so far and has released EMUI 11 stable updates for the Huawei P40, P40 Pro, and P40 Pro+. Since all of its latest flagships have already been updated to the new software release, Huawei has now started rolling out EMUI 11 for a couple of older flagships, including the Huawei P30, P30 Pro, Mate 20, Mate 20 X, and Mate 20 Pro.

After Google released Android 8 Oreo back in 2017, Huawei bumped the EMUI version from 5 to 8 in order to match the Android number version. Thus, today's EMUI 11 release was widely expected to be based on Google's new Android 11 update, but that's not the case on the beta we loaded onto our Huawei P40 Pro unit the other day. Instead, Huawei's latest Android software is still based on Google's Android 10 release from last year—but that doesn't mean there aren't enough upgrades here to justify an EMUI version bump.

During the conference, the company unveiled EMUI 11 — the latest version of the company's custom Android skin. While the latest software version is not based on Google's latest Android 11 release just yet, the EMUI 11 update packs in a bunch of new features and improvements that are expected to make their way to Huawei devices in the coming months. HDC 2020 starts September 10th, EMUI 11 based on Android 11 and Harmony OS 2.0 expected

Huawei is trying hard to decouple Google services from their custom Android skin, EMUI, due to the trade ban imposed on the company by the US government. Replacing the Google Play Store with the Huawei AppGallery and shipping Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) instead of Google Mobile Services are some of the notable steps in that direction. The OEM has also created a dedicated voice assistant named Celia as an alternative to the Google Assistant. Celia was originally announced during the online launch event of the Huawei P40 series, but the initial firmware packages didn't feature the voice assistant.

The company has been on track with the beta release and has already rolled out the update for the Chinese variants of the devices. While it previously hadn't revealed when the update will be available on the global variants, the company is now rolling out EMUI 10.1 beta for the Huawei P30 series, Mate 30 series, and Nova 5T globally.

In October last year, Honor opened Magic UI 3.0 beta for the Honor View 20 and Honor 20. A month later, the company began rolling out stable Android 10 updates to both devices in multiple regions before the rollout was paused for undisclosed reasons. Now it appears the company has resolved whatever issue it had been facing and is resuming the Magic UI 3.0 rollout globally for four Honor devices.
Huawei P40 to launch in March 2020 with Huawei's version of Google Mobile Services
A senior official from Huawei has now confirmed that the P40 series will be launched late in March next year and it will feature the HMS ecosystem.
Owing to the political situation between Huawei and the USA, the company was forced to release the Mate 30 Pro without the most crucial part of Android — Google Play Services. Huawei had no alternative to the proprietary Google Mobile Services (GMS) for the device and as such, the device took a huge hit in sales. Earlier this year in November though, we got our first look at Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and HMS Core — the company's in-house alternative to GMS, consisting of both user-facing apps and background apps. HMS aims to provide users with an experience that's consistent across devices and independent of the platform update. And much like how GMS is made up of app elements and core elements, the HMS ecosystem comprises of HMS Apps, the HMS Core, and the HMS Capabilities that the Core enables through its available APIs. While HMS still hasn't made an appearance on any Huawei device yet, a senior official from the company has now revealed that it will be rolled out with the Huawei P40 series next year.

The last two months since the executive order by the U.S. government have been full of suspense and dilemma for users who own or wish to buy Android devices made by Huawei and Honor. While Huawei has reportedly been working on a homegrown alternative to Android, the development of EMUI 10 based on Android Q appears to be going on with full swing too. Back in June, we saw the first preview of Android Q running on the Huawei P30 Pro and even saw Huawei's optimism about rolling out Android Q update, in spite of the hurdles by the U.S. government, for at least 15 Huawei devices. For Honor, however, there has been no such assurances yet except for the Honor 20/20 Pro. But as per the company's Twitter handle, Android Q is already under consideration for the Honor 8X and the Honor 10.

Huawei is fighting to get an extension on the grace period for other companies to do limited business with them, which will allow the company to roll out Android updates with GMS to their current lineup of devices.
