Fairphone - the brand known for offering highly repairable and sustainable products with long-term software support commitments, has just announced its latest smartphone. Like its predecessors, the Fairphone 5 comes with relatively middle-of-the-line hardware, but offers a ton of features that could make it an attractive proposition for the environmentally conscious. To start off, the device is said to be made out of 70 percent fairly-sourced and recycled materials, and is built by workers who the company claims are paid a "living wage." According to the official Fariphone 5 listing page, the device comes with more than 70 percent "fair focus or recycled materials," including fairly-procured minerals.

At the time, the company promised three to five years of software support for the device. But it has far exceeded expectations, delivering five OS upgrades and seven years of security updates for the phone. Sadly, it's the end of the road for the Fairphone 2, as the company has finally announced that it will end software support for the device in March this year.

Much of the conversation in the tech world revolves around large companies like Google, Samsung, and Apple. They have the resources to pump out devices and dominate the space, but there are smaller players as well. Fairphone is one such player and it has been around for quite a while, actually. The company is now rolling out a beta of Android 9 Pie to its Fairphone 2.

Electronic waste is a major issue caused in part by the unwillingness of consumer electronics companies to support their devices for more than just a few years. Many Android smartphone makers only provide software support for 3 years, and only a handful of companies make smartphones that are easy to repair. That's why 3 people came together in early 2013 to found Fairphone, a company that designs smartphones with their environmental and social impacts in mind. Their smartphones are generally easily repairable and have an abundance of parts available on demand. The company has released three smartphones so far: the Fairphone 1, Fairphone 2, and Fairphone 3. The Fairphone 3 launched in mid-2019 with Android 9 Pie and Google Mobile Services on board, but the company also promotes open-source development for those who want to move away from the Google ecosystem. Now, you can buy the Fairphone 3 with a Google-free OS pre-installed.

If you call yourself a custom ROM veteran, you definitely have heard about LineageOS. LineageOS traces its roots back to CyanogenMod, the custom ROM that became popular on the HTC Dream/T-Mobile G1, the first Android smartphone available for purchase. CyanogenMod, in turn, went on to become one of the most popular custom ROMs available across a plethora of devices, and several of the key developers and maintainers of the project went on to establish LineageOS when Cyanogen decided to stop supporting CyanogenMod. LineageOS picked up the reins with LineageOS 13.0 and LineageOS 14.1 releases, and the project has continued along over the years. Now, LineageOS is marking its major version bump up to LineageOS 17.1 with Android 10 as the base.

One of the most interesting concepts that has been introduced in the smartphone ecosystem in recent years is the Fairphone. On paper, it might not look like much more than an average entry-level/mid-range smartphone, and in fact, its slightly inflated price point might make you look somewhere else. But this higher price has a reason behind it: the company focuses on making phones humanely and with longevity in mind. The company makes sure workers are rewarded accordingly for their work and not exploited. The phone is made with renewable, recycled parts, making as small of an impact to the environment as possible. And it's built modularly, making repairs as less of a hassle as possible to keep the phone running for as long as the hardware lasts.

Over the last few months, LineageOS 16 has added support for more devices like the OnePlus 6 and Essential Phone, but the custom ROM has also added a ton of new features along the way.
