Nokia is introducing three new smartphones to the US with the C100, C300, and XR21. For the most part, you're not going to find anything here that's going to become one of the best Android phones of 2023, but the C100 and C300 are going to be great options if you're looking for cheap Android phones, and the Nokia XR21 looks like a great option if you need something that can take a beating.

The Nokia G400 5G was announced at the top of the year during CES 2022. At the time, the firm did not offer a release date, only saying that the phone was part of a lineup that would arrive at U.S. carriers sometime in the first half of the year. While it's a little late to arrive at retail, it has been confirmed to be available at T-Mobile.

Although Nokia is now just a footnote in mobile phone history, it dominated the market at its peak, with nearly 50 percent market share. Despite the brand dying long ago, the name remains, with HMD Global picking up the mantle and producing Android smartphones and feature phones. The company doesn't typically deliver anything earth-shattering these days. Still, it at least manages to have some fun with the IP, creating updated handsets that pluck at the heartstrings of nostalgia.

Android 12 has now been out for a while, and Android 13 is just around the corner. Most flagship and mid-range smartphones that are eligible for the Android 12 update from their respective manufacturers have received the new software. However, there are still many devices for which the update hasn’t rolled out yet, particularly some budget smartphones where updates are not as much of a priority as they are on more expensive devices. This, however, doesn’t mean that they’re necessarily going to be left behind. Now, three entry-level smartphones from HMD Global — the Nokia 2.4, Nokia G10, and Nokia G20 are getting updates to Android 12.

Google released the final build of Android 12 in October of last year, and by the end of the year, many of the most popular Android smartphones were already updated. However, it's taking some manufacturers longer than others to upgrade all their phones, and HMD Global has been slow to roll out Android 12 to its Nokia-branded devices. HMD is now releasing the update to yet another budget Nokia phone, the Nokia XR20.

What happened to Android One?

What happened to Android One? It's hard to actually say, as Google doesn't want to talk about it. We can infer what's likely wrong, though.

Do you remember Android One? It's a pretty barebones Android variant that came with some smartphones, most notably pretty much all of HMD Global's Nokia-licensed portfolio. However, it's also responsible for the birth of popular devices such as the Xiaomi Mi A1 and was lauded by some thanks to its commitment to quick updates -- both major platform updates and security updates. And if you don't remember Android One, we won't blame you either, since the initiative has been missing from the public eye for a while now.

One of the most impressive new features in Android 12 is the automatic Material You theming system, which changes the appearance of your device (specifically, the colors of certain interface elements) based on the current wallpaper. Codenamed 'Monet,' the theming system is currently exclusive to Google's own Pixel devices, but now we know at least some manufacturers are planning to support some variation of it.

Later that year, in September, we saw a leaked hands-on video of a Nokia phone running this new version of Android. Soon thereafter, we spotted a Nokia feature phone with the model number TA-1208 on the Wi-Fi Alliance website. The listing also revealed that the device would be called the Nokia 400 upon release, and it would run GAFP -- Google Android for Feature Phones. Although HMD Global ended up canceling the device, another leaked hands-on video showcasing the phone has now surfaced online.
