Huawei is finally bringing the long-due EMUI 10 based Android 10 update to the P20 Pro and Mate 10. The company has begun rolling out the update globally, with users in Europe and Asia reportedly receiving the OTA. Late last year, Huawei announced EMUI 10, its latest software based on Android 10. They kicked things off with a beta that was made available for many Huawei and Honor devices. Today, the company is announcing (via press release) the rollout schedule for stable EMUI 10, starting with the Huawei P30 series.

These are complicated times for Huawei and Huawei fans. The US trade ban has put the company's future in limbo and consumers rightfully have a lot of questions. To combat some of the rumors and speculation, Huawei has published a "Huawei Answers" page to formally respond to some of the concerns. There's good news in these responses for Huawei fans who want EMUI 10 and Android Q.

Chromebooks are known for being lightweight and easy to use. This makes Chrome OS devices perfect for on-the-go computing. While we already carry smartphones that can connect to the internet at all times, most people don't want a separate data plan for their laptop. Chrome OS has made this easy with a feature called Instant Tethering, but it has been limited to Google's own Chromebooks and phones. Now, Google is bringing the feature to more devices.

Huawei releases kernel source code for Kirin 980 and Kirin 970 devices on Android Pie

The kernel source code for all Kirin 980 and Kirin 970 smartphones running Android Pie has been released by Huawei. You can download it here!

Android smartphones all run on top of the Linux kernel, and OEMs are required to distribute the source code of all Linux kernel binaries that they ship on their devices. While most companies do release kernel sources in a (somewhat) timely manner, there are some companies that take their sweet, sweet time in doing so. One such example is Xiaomi, which to their credit has recently upped their game by releasing the kernel source code in the timeframe they agreed on. Having access to the kernel source code can be a huge boon for developers seeking to create custom AOSP-based ROMs and custom kernels for a smartphone. Although the company recently closed down official bootloader unlocking tools, Huawei has still released the kernel source code for all Kirin 980 and Kirin 970 smartphones running Android Pie (as they are still required to do so).

Ever since the official release of Android 9 Pie for the Google Pixel smartphones, we've been tracking the update progress of all the major Android device makers. Apart from Google, device makers like Xiaomi, HMD Global, Sony, Motorola, OnePlus, and Sharp have released Android Pie updates for several of their devices. Among the top two Android device makers, Samsung has only released Android Pie beta updates for their flagship Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 devices while Huawei and its sub-brand Honor have released stable updates for 8 devices and beta updates for 14 devices (and launched 5 devices with the latest Android version). Whatever your thoughts on the company's stance on bootloader unlocking, it's hard to deny they haven't been providing adequate software support for their large portfolio of devices.

Google's visual processing prowess is among the best in the Android ecosystem. That's why Google Camera ports are so highly requested for non-supported devices. Last month, we opened a new forum specifically for unofficial ports of Google's Camera application. We have already moved some of the most popular threads to this category and they've been fairly popular. The developers are trying to bring the best post-processing capabilities to as many devices as possible. One of Arnova8G2's latest Google Camera ports brings functional Night Sight to some Huawei and Honor devices like the Honor Play, Huawei Mate 10, and Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

A few days ago, Huawei unveiled the latest version of its EMUI software: EMUI 9. Based on Android 9 Pie, the latest version of EMUI brings a new design with a streamlined user interface, various unspecified software optimizations to improve performance, GPU Turbo 2.0, Huawei's take on Google's Digital Wellbeing service, and a new gesture navigation system on top of the standard Android Pie platform features. Huawei opened up applications for an EMUI 9 beta program but limited it to 100 members in select regions who own the Honor 10, Honor View 10, Honor Play, Huawei Mate 10/Mate 10 Pro, or Huawei P20/P20 Pro. The beta software that was shown off at IFA 2018 did not include the new gestures, but we managed to get our hands on an updated version of the EMUI 9 beta that does have the new gesture controls.

Fortnite, the massively popular free-to-play battle royale game, is coming soon to Android. Epic Games said the game would launch this summer but we now know that the game will likely launch as an exclusive on the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. It won't be on the Google Play Store (but possibly on Samsung Galaxy Apps) as the game will be distributed from Epic Games' website. If you're wondering whether your Android smartphone or tablet is powerful enough to run Fortnite Mobile on Android, we have put together a comprehensive list of software and hardware requirements based on a configuration file we obtained from a leaked build of the Android app.

Since launching on Apple iOS, users of Android smartphones and tablets have been wondering when Fortnite would launch on their devices too. The Android release has apparently been delayed as we recently reported that it will be launching as an exclusive with the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. This exclusivity will supposedly last 30 days. After 30 days, Fortnite Mobile on Android will become available for all supported Android devices. If you're wondering if your device will be supported, we've got the list of supported Android devices taken straight from Epic Games' own website.

Huawei and their subsidiary Honor ship their smartphones and tablets with their EMUI software. It's a heavily modified version of the stock Android framework that offers a lot of features not found in AOSP. Some people prefer all of the added features while the stock Android purists would much rather have stock Android running on top of Huawei/Honor hardware. If that describes you, then you may want to check out the work done by the OpenKirin team. They recently released unofficial LineageOS, CarbonROM, and Resurrection Remix builds for all EMUI 8 devices.

Huawei launched the Mate 10 series in October with the HiSilicon Kirin 970 system-on-chip. The Kirin 970 notably has dedicated hardware for AI, in the form of a Neural Processing Unit (NPU). Last month, we also showed how Huawei was developing HiAssistant (powered by HiAI), a Google Assistant + Google Lens competitor for the Chinese market. Now, Huawei has released the HiAI Engine alongside the Huawei P20.

Exclusive: This is Huawei's Answer to Google Assistant and Alexa for the Chinese Market

Huawei is preparing to launch the 'HiAssistant' virtual assistant for the Chinese market, powered by its 'HiAI' NLU technology. The feature will be available for smartphones with the Kirn 970 SoC with Huawei's EMUI 8.1 software.

The world of virtual assistants is dominated by two names: Amazon and Google. In Q3 2017, the Amazon Echo and Google Home devices dominated at a staggering 92% market share, according to Strategy Analytics. Other notable competitors in this space include Samsung with Bixby Assistant and Apple with Siri, but their market penetration pales in comparison to Amazon and Google. Even telecommunication giants such as Huawei have struggled to compete in this space, and Huawei in particular has resigned itself to only focusing on the Chinese market.

Magisk, the popular systemless root manager, is now available for the Honor View 10, Huawei Mate 10, and Huawei Mate 10 Pro. Systemless root allows you to make modifications to system apps and libraries to enable things like audio enhancing mods, system-wide ad-blocking, font changing, Google Camera port on the Essential Phone, Night Light and Camera2 API on the Xiaomi Mi A1, and even allowing for fully customizing the Google Pixel 2's Active Edge. It does this, and much, much more, all without tripping Google's SafetyNet, meaning you can still use Android Pay on your rooted device. Now owners of the latest Huawei and Honor flagship devices can also enjoy Magisk.

Being able to record phone calls is really useful -- especially when you need to take notes and don't have a pen and pencil handy. Lucky for Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro owners, they've just gained this functionality. XDA Senior Member badmania98 came up with a step-by-step guide that shows how to activate it. The process involves downloading a file attachment from the XDA forum thread, transferring it to a specific location on the Huawei Mate 10/Mate 10 Pro's internal storage, and giving it proper file permissions. If all goes according to plan, you'll get new options for automatic call recording tucked away within the phone application's settings.

Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro AOSP Android Oreo thanks to Project Treble
Thanks to Project Treble, AOSP Android Oreo Boots on the Huawei Mate 10 & Mate 10 Pro

Thanks to Project Treble, users can boot a working build of AOSP Android Oreo onto the Huawei Mate 10 and Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

Project Treble has occupied the minds of many Android enthusiasts in the past few weeks. There was some outrage among members of the OnePlus community when it was revealed that no current OnePlus devices (including the recently released OnePlus 5T) would support Project Treble. OnePlus and Nokia have an understandable reason for not supporting Project Treble in an Android Oreo release as disappointing as that may be. The reason Treble support is so exciting for the XDA community goes beyond theoretically faster software updates, since the Vendor Test Suite to verify Treble compatibility requires that devices be able to boot a generic build of AOSP Android Oreo. Thanks to this, I was able to boot AOSP 8.0 Oreo onto the Huawei Mate 9 last month, and now users are reporting that they are able to boot this same ROM on the Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro as well.

Though the company has virtually no presence in the United States, Huawei is a top 3 smartphone manufacturer in the world. Its subsidiary, Honor, aims to penetrate the Indian market with budget smartphones. Elsewhere, Huawei recently launched the Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro in several markets around the world, and rumors have it the device will launch in the United States as well. Apart from the AI features powered by the company's HiSilicon Kirin 970 SoC, one of the company's most publicized features is Easy Projection. While not as powerful as Samsung DeX, it brings a desktop OS-like experience without needing to purchase an expensive accessory. Huawei is pushing the feature on its flagship devices, though there's something about Easy Projection that hasn't really been mentioned in the press yet. Behind Huawei's Easy Projection feature is a relatively unheard of player—Beijing Chaozhuo Technology, developers of Phoenix OS.

Huawei has a theming engine built into EMUI, its custom Android skin, and a number of themes come pre-installed. But the community's made themes of its own, and one of the most visually impressive is from XDA Senior Member mr.mrcn. His dark mode for all EMUI 5/5.1/8 devices (like the Mate 10) inverts the colors of almost every menu, home screen, and application shortcut.
