Xiaomi has launched a lot of devices internationally recently. Between their arrival in Ireland and the UK along with the advent of two new additions to the Mi 8 lineup of smartphones, they've been keeping busy. We caught a glimpse of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite in China back in September with no word of international availability. Following that, we also learned about the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro, which features an under-display fingerprint sensor. The Mi 8 Pro came to the UK while the Mi 8 Lite has launched in both Poland and Egypt. MIUI 9 Global Stable is here for both devices, and you can flash it now as a recovery ROM.

Xiaomi's Anti-Rollback Protection Explained: How to avoid bricking your phone

All Xiaomi smartphones and tablets will have anti-rollback protection enabled. What is it and how do you avoid bricking your device because of it?

By

Back in July, Xiaomi rolled out MIUI 10 Global Beta 8.7.5 for eight Xiaomi devices. When users installed the update on their Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, they unknowingly flashed a build with anti-rollback protection enabled. Users who didn’t like MIUI 10 Global Beta found a nasty surprise when they tried to re-install the latest MIUI 9 Global Stable ROM: their phones were bricked! This wasn’t the kind of brick that you could fix by restoring a TWRP backup, flashing a new ROM, or using MiFlash to restore to a factory image. This is a hard, unrecoverable brick that requires the use of EDL mode to fix. But EDL mode isn’t accessible unless you have an authorized account, so many users were left with no way to fix their phone except sending it in to an authorized service center or paying to use someone’s account with EDL access. In this article, we’re going to explain everything you need to know about Xiaomi’s new anti-rollback protection so you can avoid bricking your new phone.

Xiaomi has been dominating the market budget and mid-range Indian markets thanks to their Redmi series of devices. There's the regular Redmi series that are priced a little less and have smaller screens compared to the Redmi Note series. The company made massive gains in India thanks to these devices even though, in my personal opinion, they dropped the ball with the naming scheme. In any case, that doesn't seem to have slowed their growth because these phones are selling like hotcakes. Some of their more recent popular devices include the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, and for the former, we now have the latest stable Android 8.1 Oreo update.

Xiaomi has seen remarkable success in markets like India and China and is also one of the most popular brands in the budget segment in several developing nations. But it still has a long way to go before it can call itself a developer-friendly OEM, thanks to its policies as well as some perplexing decisions made in its OS, MIUI.

MIUI 10 may be the latest version of Xiaomi's custom UI, but that doesn't mean that MIUI 9 has become obsolete. In fact, it will take months for Xiaomi to release Global Stable and China Stable ROMs for its devices. The company has already specified the roll-out schedule for MIUI 10 Global Beta, as well as MIUI 10 China Alpha. An important thing to note, however, is that a MIUI 10 update is separate from an Android Oreo update, as MIUI 10 ROMs can be based on older versions of Android.

Xiaomi recently made a big splash in the Android market with the release of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro for the mid-range market and the Xiaomi Redmi S2/Y2 for the budget market. We're still seeing these devices grow in popularity, which has led us to today as the company has announced a new addition to their regular Redmi series. Today, Xiaomi was in China to announce the launch of the Redmi 6 with MediaTek's latest MediaTek Helio P22 SoC and its more affordable companion, the Redmi 6A with MediaTek's Helio A22 SoC. Both chipsets are built on the 12nm process, which should consumer 48% less power than comparable 28nm chips.

An unreleased build of MIUI 9 with Android P-style design changes hints at what may be coming in MIUI 10. This build also show off some new fullscreen gestures on the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2.

Last week, we wrote about some big changes in the latest unreleased beta build of MIUI 9 for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2. The build was quickly pulled because it showed off some radical design changes for MIUI. Just about every major aspect of the system UI was redesigned from the lock screen, notifications, recent apps, quick settings, volume panel, and more. The build had an Android P-style design in some regards and could be what we end up seeing in MIUI 10. One thing we missed from that earlier post (because the build was taken down so quickly) is that the fullscreen navigation gestures (as found in the latest MIUI 9 betas on the Redmi Note 5 and Mi Mix) are receiving some tweaks. Here's a video, courtesy of @XiaomiUI on Telegram.

Latest MIUI 9 build for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 brings Android P-style UI changes

While MIUI's design language is a far cry from the new Material Design in Android P, that doesn't mean Xiaomi can't adopt some of Android P's style. The latest MIUI 9 update for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is here with a redesigned interface.

With the introduction of Android P, Xiaomi released a near-stock build of Android P for the Mi Mix 2S. While we still aren't sure what the next version of MIUI will look like, it appears that an upcoming version of MIUI 9 will bring a redesign to the lock screen, notifications, recent apps, quick settings, volume panel, and more. Version 8.5.11 of MIUI 9 has leaked online for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 (based on Android 8.0 Oreo) and a few users have taken it for a spin to show off what the redesign looks like.

Launched in mid-February, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro is one of the most popular new devices in India. The device launched in India with MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1 Nougat, but it later launched in China with MIUI 9 based on Android Oreo (Android 8.1 in particular). The China stable ROM can be flashed on the Indian global variant, but there are a few bugs that are keeping most people away. Now, however, the Android 8.1 Oreo-based global beta ROM has been leaked for the Indian Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro!

The advent of 18:9 "full-screen" displays has meant that capacitive buttons have been replaced by on-screen buttons.  For example, a 6-inch 18:9 display has more screen area than a 5.5-inch 16:9 display because of its increased height (as the width remains the same). However, the presence of onscreen buttons in phones with 18:9 displays means that some extent of the screen area gained has been spent in the onscreen navigation bar.

Xiaomi may not be the first device maker to launch a device with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 (that crown goes to Samsung with the Galaxy S9), but they were certainly the first to announce a device with the chipset: the Mi 7. For whatever reason, the company pushed back the release date of the Mi 7 and is instead poised to announce the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S in its stead. Although the device has a launch date, the only information that has been officially confirmed is the fact that its sports the Snapdragon 845. Through firmware files XDA-Developers has exclusively obtained, we earlier reported on several key pieces of information about the device, and today we return with new tidbits of information.
