Another day, another modder shoehorning the newest Android build to legacy devices. While the Samsung Galaxy S23 series is stealing all the limelight, a developer in our forums has managed to port One UI 5.0 with Android 13 to the Galaxy S9 and Note 9 in the form of an aftermarket firmware called Noble ROM.

Samsung has been quite generous with delivering the One UI 4.1 update. Aside from the flagships, the Korean OEM rolled out the new skin to affordable offerings like the Galaxy Note 10 Lite as well. That phone is powered by the Exynos 9810 processor, a 10nm octa-core SoC from 2018 that also powered the international variant of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9. Unfortunately, these devices didn't even receive the Android 11 update from Samsung, although both of them are theoretically capable of running it. This prompted XDA Recognized Developer AlexisXDA to port the One UI 4.1-flavored Android 12 firmware to the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy Note 9.

The Samsung Galaxy S9, S9 Plus, and the Galaxy Note 9 were the company’s 2018 flagship smartphones, and the three devices are still poised to receive security updates. While the Korean OEM has committed to deliver up to 3 generations of Android OS updates, the policy only applies to flagship models from the Galaxy S10 onward. As a result, both the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 are officially stuck with Android 10. Thankfully, these devices still have quite the aftermarket development support on our forums, and a developer has now released the first set of official builds of the ArrowOS custom ROM based on Android 12 for them.

Samsung rolled out One UI 3.0 based on Android 11 for the Galaxy Note 10 Lite earlier this year in January. With the Galaxy S21 series launch, Samsung released One UI 3.1 with more new features and the software eventually landed on the Galaxy Note 10 Lite. The phone is powered by the Exynos 9810 processor, a 10nm octa-core SoC from 2018 that also powered the international variant of the Galaxy Note 9. Unfortunately, the Galaxy Note 9 is excluded from getting the official Android 11 update from Samsung, although the device is theoretically capable of running it. This prompted XDA Recognized Developer AlexisXDA to port the One UI 3.1-flavored Android 11 firmware to the Galaxy Note 9.

Following the launch of the Galaxy Note 20 Series in August this year, Samsung started rolling out the One UI 2.5 update to older Galaxy devices. Since then, the update has made its way to quite a few devices, including the Galaxy S10 Series, Galaxy Note 10 Series, Galaxy S10 Lite, Galaxy Note 10 Lite, and the Galaxy Tab S6. Just a day ago, OnePlus surprised everyone by rolling out the September 2020 Android security patches through a new set of "Developer Preview" builds of Android 11 for the OnePlus 8 series. There was no sorcery involved, though, as Android Partners (i.e. major OEMs) are always notified of all Android framework issues and Linux kernel issues by Google at least 30 days before the actual ASB is made public. Samsung, for example, maintains a fantastic track record when it comes to delivering such monthly security updates via the stable channel even before Google. In fact, the Korean OEM has done it again – the Galaxy Note 9 is now receiving the September 2020 security patches.

If you consider yourself a true flashaholic, then the name "Resurrection Remix" should ring a bell. The custom ROM is known for its style and customizability, while its foundation is based on bits and pieces from LineageOS, Pixel Experience, and OmniROM. The developers started rebasing the project on top of Android 10 a few months ago, and they are now confident enough to remove the beta tag. The Resurrection Remix team has recently announced its first set of stable builds based on Android 10 for a bunch of devices, including several Xiaomi smartphones and a few others from ASUS, OnePlus, Samsung, and other OEMs.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 debuted in 2018 with Samsung Experience 9.5 based on Android 8.1 Oreo. The device received its second major Android OS update (probably the last one as well) in the form of One UI 2.0 on top of Android 10 a few months ago. The arrival of One UI 2.1 to the Galaxy Note 9 was confirmed by a Korean Samsung community moderator later on. And now, the company is finally rolling out the One UI 2.1 update to the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 via stable channel.

Official TWRP support has been added for the Exynos variant of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE, and the Xiaomi Mi Translator.

Android 10's recovery implementation and the introduction of the "super" partition containing multiple dynamically resizable partitions has considerably slowed down the process of porting TWRP to devices running Android 10 out of the box. However, older non-Pixel phones that have been updated to Android 10 via OTA are not affected by those changes because they are not required to migrate to the new super partition scheme. Owing to this, XDA Recognized Developer corsicanu has brought official TWRP support for the Exynos Samsung Galaxy Note 9 with full compatibility with the One UI 2.0/Android 10 firmware. In addition, XDA Senior Member TingyiChen has brought support to the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE and Mi Translator devices.

One UI 2.1 is the latest iteration of Samsung's Android 10-based skin that debuted on the Galaxy Z Flip and the Galaxy S20 series of smartphones. Samsung later rolled out the One UI 2.1 update to the Galaxy S10, Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy Fold, Galaxy S10 Lite, Galaxy Note 10 Lite, and the Galaxy Tab S6. Although Samsung has yet to officially roll out the update to the Galaxy Note 9 or Galaxy S9, owners of these devices can enjoy all the goodness of One UI 2.1 thanks to the work of XDA Recognized Developer AlexisXDA.

LineageOS is one of the most popular custom ROMs available for Android devices, and the team behind the project recently released the first LineageOS 17.1 builds based on Android 10. A handful of Google devices, such as the original Pixel lineup and the Google Nexus 6, couldn't make it to the initial roster, but eventually secured spots a few days later.  Now, the LineageOS team has extended support for a few more devices, including the Exynos Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+, Galaxy Note 9, and the Realme 2 Pro.

Samsung launched its flagship S20 series early last month, offering some impressive hardware specifications. These included the 100x Space Zoom camera on the S20 Ultra, the 108MP primary shooter with Nona Binning, and up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM. On the software front, the devices rolled out with One UI 2.1 based on Android 10 that included a couple of additional features like Spotify support in the Clock app. Other than the Galaxy S20 series, the Galaxy Z Flip is the only Samsung smartphone that runs One UI 2.1 right now. However, according to a recent report from Sammobile, the company will soon roll out One UI 2.1 to the Galaxy Note 10, S10, Note 9, and S9.

Bixby Routines can now be sideloaded on the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Note 9

Bixby Routines, an automation feature that was launched with the Samsung Galaxy S10, can now be sideloaded on the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9.

Tasker is the most popular automation app for Android phones, but its functionality and workflow is for intermediate users or those who take the time to learn how the app works. For more basic tasks, there are other third-party apps such as Automate. In terms of first-party features, Apple has its Shortcuts feature on iOS, but stock Android doesn't have such a feature as Google's Rules is a Pixel-exclusive feature for now. Last year, Samsung released Bixby Routines, a new Bixby feature, as part of the Samsung Galaxy S10 series launch. While the functionality of Bixby Routines couldn't match Tasker's functionality, it worked well at its own beginner-level use cases. The app is available on the Galaxy S10, the Galaxy Note 10 series, the Galaxy Fold, and was rolled out as an update for the Galaxy A50. It's also available on Samsung's newer A series phones. However, the company hasn't rolled out Bixby Routines for its older flagships, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. Now, Android Police has tested that sideloading the latest version of the Bixby Routines app works on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 running Android 10-based One UI 2 without root. It also works for some users on older devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S8 running Android 9 Pie.

Developers have exploited the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Note 9 to get root access on the Snapdragon models

Developers have figured out how to root the Snapdragon models of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 thanks to an exploit, but there's a catch.

Samsung phones sold in the U.S. are notoriously difficult to root. Samsung Knox makes rooting especially annoying, and it tends to break a lot of things if you do manage to get root. Users in the U.S. can't even unlock the bootloader to root their devices in the first place. Every once in awhile, though, developers figure out an exploit that allows us to root. The Snapdragon Galaxy S7, Snapdragon Galaxy S8, and Snapdragon Galaxy Note 8 were possible to root using exploits, for example. The same developers behind the SamPWND exploit for the S8/Note 8 are back again with exploits that allow for root access on the Snapdragon Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ and Galaxy Note 9 — although there is a catch.

Shortly after the launch of the Galaxy Note 10 last year, Samsung introduced the new DeX integration with Windows and Mac PCs for the device. The feature was soon ported over to the Galaxy S10 series and there were rumors that the company was planning on extending support to its flagship lineup from 2018 with the One UI 2.0 update. Now, with the rollout of the Android 10 beta update for the Samsung Galaxy S9 series and stable update for the Note 9, it's essentially been confirmed that DeX for PC is supported on Samsung's 2018 flagships.
