Dipping your toes into the Android modding world isn't a very complicated job, but you have to fulfill a few prerequisites. Be it rooting or installing a custom ROM like LineageOS, most of the aftermarket tinkering requires you to connect your Android smartphone to a computer using a USB cable, so you can use tools like the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) to interact with the device. Things are usually more jolting for a power user, as they may also want to reinstall the factory firmware on the phone or tablet, which means the OEM-specific flashing utilities come into the picture as well.

Best ZTE Phones in 2024

If you want an affordable Android smartphone with decent specs, ZTE phones are worth a shot.

Although ZTE is no longer a major player in the smartphone industry, it still plays a significant role. The Chinese smartphone maker is often among the first to adopt bleeding-edge technologies and make them accessible to buyers at an affordable price. For instance, ZTE debuted under-display camera tech back in 2020 with the Axon 20 5G, long before more prominent players like Xiaomi, Oppo, and Samsung got it to the market. Similarly, its sub-brand Nubia offers gaming phones featuring innovative tech at a cheaper price than other OEMs.

ZTE Axon 40 Ultra Review: Fantastic at everything, except selfies

The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is a flagship smartphone with an under-display camera, though the camera hasn't improved in all the right ways.

ZTE has been working on its under-display camera tech for quite a while now, with the ZTE Axon 20 5G being one of the first commercial devices to pack one. Back then it wasn't great -- the pixel density over the camera was incredibly low and stood out like a sore thumb, and the picture quality itself wasn't very good. Now, two generations later with the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra, the company has improved on its under-display cameras a whole lot.

Pop-up cameras and notches are more or less a thing of the past, and the hole-punch camera has taken their place. While it's nowhere near as aesthetically pleasing as a purely bezel-less experience, they have been the best option for anyone looking for a minimal bezel in a smartphone for the past year. However, the ZTE Axon 20 last year offered one of the first under-display cameras in a smartphone on the market, although it was somewhat underwhelming. Now its successor is here, and it's a much bigger improvement than I had hoped for.

At the time, the company didn't share any details about international availability, but it has now confirmed that the Axon 30 will make its way to international markets next month.

Last week we saw some exciting new hardware coming out from Huawei, ZTE, Motorola, and Nokia. ZTE showcased the Axon 30 with an improved under-display camera while Huawei made a strong statement with the launch of its new P50 series, promising "new breakthrough tech in mobile imaging.” Nokia unveiled a tough phone that promises to last for years with 2 years of warranty and 4 years of software support. ZTE takes another shot at under-display camera tech with the Axon 30

The new Axon 30 comes with an improved under-display camera which seems to address many of the issues that plagued the Axon 20.

After weeks of teasing, ZTE today unveiled the Axon 30, the company’s second smartphone with an under-display camera. The first attempt, the Axon 20, was a failed one; the selfie camera on that thing produced blurry photos in all lighting conditions, and the camera was clearly visible to the naked eye when displaying a light-colored background in the status bar. ZTE says the latest model, equipped with the 2nd gen under-display camera, doesn’t suffer from any such issues and represents a big qualitative leap from its predecessor.

ZTE teases Axon 30 with an improved under-display camera

ZTE has confirmed its upcoming Axon 30 will come with a second-generation under-display camera and a higher refresh screen.

Last year ZTE unveiled an intriguing phone called the Axon 20, the first commercial smartphone with an under-display selfie camera. The concept of a device without a notch, punch-hole, or pop-up mechanism sounded great on paper. However, the real-world experience was mediocre at best. As we noted in our review, images produced by Axon 20's under-display selfie camera were quite blurry in all lighting conditions. Despite the first failed attempt, ZTE is in no mood to give up on the under-display camera tech just yet. The company is gearing up to launch a successor dubbed the Axon 30, which will come equipped with an improved under-display camera.

Nubia's latest flagship looks like a love child of the Galaxy S21 Ultra and Mi 11 Ultra

ZTE's latest Nubia Z30 Pro takes cue from the Galaxy S21 Ultra and Mi 11 Ultra. It packs Snapdragon 888, a 144Hz curved AMOLED and more.

ZTE’s Nubia brand is famous for its Red Magic lineup of gaming phones. But the company also makes conventional phones that have a more palatable design and focus on average consumers. Well, that’s exactly the case with Nubia’s newly released Nubia Z30 Pro, which features a design that puts it right there up with the Galaxy S21 Ultra and Mi 11 Ultra.

Last month ZTE unveiled the Axon 3o Ultra, its first proper flagship in a long while. The latest premium smartphone from the Chinese OEM does away with the gimmicky under-display camera tech of its predecessor and focuses on delivering a top-tier smartphone experience with the tried and tested hardware. The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra has everything you would expect from a 2021 flagship, including a curved AMOLED display, Snapdragon 888 chipset, a quad camera setup consisting of three 64MP shooters, 66W fast charging support, and more. At the time of the launch, the phone was limited to the Chinese market, but ZTE promised it would soon bring the phone to international markets. And today, the company is finally detailing the global pricing and availability.

ZTE Axon 30 Ultra Hands-on: A US-bound Android flagship that competes with Samsung's Galaxy S21

ZTE's Axon 30 Ultra is an Android flagship phone with a 144Hz OLED display and a trio of 64MP cameras. Best of all, it's coming to the US.

After introducing the world's first under-display selfie camera that wasn't quite ready for prime time with last year's Axon 20, ZTE is back with the Axon 30 Ultra. Despite its "Ultra" moniker, the Axon 30 Ultra actually plays things a bit safer. Sure, there are some gaudy numbers that pop off the spec sheet, including a 144Hz OLED display and not one but three 64MP cameras, but this is still a more conventional glass-aluminum sandwich flagship. This phone seems specifically positioned against Samsung's Galaxy S21 Plus (but not Ultra). As such, we decided to include a brief comparison in our hands-on.

ZTE's new Blade 11 Prime has wireless charging and not much else for under $200

ZTE's new budget phone is coming to Verizon-owned Visible and Yahoo Mobile, but there are probably better ways to spend $200.

ZTE might not be the largest name in smartphones, especially in the United States, but the company continues to sell a lot of budget phones through carriers. ZTE and Verizon-owned Visible partnered earlier this year to release the 5G-capable ZTE Blade X1, and now the company has another phone coming to Visible (and Yahoo Mobile): the $192 Blade 11 Prime. That sounds like it should be the name of a Transformer, but no, it's a phone.

ZTE’s Axon 20 5G made headlines last year as the first commercial smartphone with an under-display selfie camera. As impressive as the idea was on paper, it turned out to be a failed attempt as the images produced from the under-display camera were not great, to say the least. ZTE clearly doesn’t want to repeat the same mistake as its latest smartphone does away from the gimmicky under-display camera tech and is opting for more conventional components. While ZTE’s previous two phones, the Axon 20 5G and Axon 11 5G were mid-range offerings, the newly-launched Axon 30 Ultra is a proper flagship. It offers rather impressive hardware, including the Snapdragon 888 chipset, high refresh rate display, triple 64MP camera setup, and more.

ZTE is reportedly close to launching a follow-up to last year’s Axon 20 5G — a device that was first to bring a sub-display selfie camera to the market. The Axon 30 Ultra will be suitably powerful, but it could lack the feature that made the Axon 20 5G stand out.
