Android 12 is the current flavor of the season as OEMs go on to update their skins with this new release as their base. If you have a foldable, there’s Android 12L to look forward to, bringing along changes that make it easier to use foldables and other large-screen devices. Now, we bring to you an exclusive look at some of the features and changes you can see in Android 13 “Tiramisu”, the next version of Android that is likely to be unveiled after Android 12L’s stable release.

Interview: Google’s VP for Android and Play PM talks about Material You, Wear OS, and the ‘L’ in Android 12L

Following last week's Android Dev Summit, we sat down with Sameer Samat, the VP of Product Management for Android and the Google Play Store.

Last week was an important one for the Android ecosystem, as the Android Developer Summit came and went. Google officially revealed the upcoming Android 12L release, which will focus primarily on large-screen devices, and there was plenty of other news to come out of the event. If you have a foldable phone, tablet, or Chromebook, there are definitely changes coming down the pipeline to get excited about.

Android 12 Snow Cone image
Android 12’s dessert name is confirmed to be Snow Cone

The dessert name for Android 12 is confirmed to be Snow Cone. However, Google doesn't use dessert names anymore so this is just a fun tidbit.

By

Another year, another Android release. As you might expect, this year’s release will be called Android 12 since Google ditched its dessert naming scheme for Android 2 years ago. Even if Android 12 won’t officially have a tasty dessert tie-in, that doesn’t mean that Google has entirely given up on giving its OS releases a dessert name. While last year’s Android 11 (Android “R”) release was internally called “Red Velvet Cake”, this year’s Android 12 (Android “S”) release seems to be called “Snow Cone”.

The upcoming device will follow the Infinix NOTE 10 Pro from earlier this year and will likely offer some compelling hardware at an affordable price point. While Inifinix is yet to reveal any official information about the phone, we've managed to procure some live images that give us a good look at its design.

Hands-on with Android 12.1: First look at the update for foldable phones!

Google is expected to release the next major update to Android, Android 12, next week, but ahead of its release, we're already hearing about Google's plans for a follow-up update. Earlier this month, XDA first reported that Google is planning to release an interim update before 2022's Android 13, which we're tentatively calling Android 12.1 in line with Google's naming convention for past point releases. Now, a source has provided XDA with an Android 12.1 build, allowing us to do a hands-on of the update to provide your first look at some of the new features.

Exclusive: Here are the new and upcoming camera features of the Google Pixel 6 Pro

XDA's source has revealed new details on the Pixel 6 Pro camera, including new and upcoming features found in the Google Camera app.

For many consumers, the camera is the most important piece of hardware in a smartphone. It's no surprise, then, that Google made the camera the marquee feature of the Pixel. While Pixel phones have never featured top-of-the-line camera hardware, Google's image processing pipeline and Google Camera app have consistently elevated the Pixel to a spot at the top of smartphone camera rankings. With this year's Pixel 6 series, Google is improving the camera hardware in ways never before seen in a Pixel phone, and with a new, custom-made chip, the company has even more control over image processing. Now, thanks to an unreleased, internal version of the Google Camera app provided by our source, as well as further insight from our source, XDA can shed some light on the possible camera features that will make use of this upgraded hardware.

Open source monet in Android 12.1
Android 12's beautiful wallpaper theming system will go open source in a future release

With the release of Android 12, Google's wallpaper-based theming system won't be fully open source. That will change in a future release.

By

We're only a couple of weeks away from the release of Android 12, but it's important to remember that the rumored October 4th launch date is only for Google's own Pixel phones. It'll take weeks, or more likely months, for the update to reach other devices, and when it does, it won't include every new feature. The most notable feature that'll be missing from the open-source release of Android 12 — and thus won't appear in many OEM forks of the OS — is Google's wallpaper-based theming engine, code-named "monet." However, it appears its exclusion from open-source Android is only temporary, as evidence has emerged that "monet" will be fully open-sourced with the release of Android 12.1.

Live Translate is a new feature debuting on the Google Pixel 6 series, and thanks to our source, here's our first look at it!

Apart from having a great camera, Google's Pixel lineup also offer many useful software features. Take 'Hold For Me' as an example: This feature lets the Google Assistant take your place on a phone call while you're waiting on hold for a business to get back to you. When Google makes a new feature that leverages its existing services, the result can be phenomenal. For the upcoming Pixel 6 series, Google plans to do just that by integrating parts of Google Lens, Translate, Assistant, and Live Caption into one feature called Live Translate. Thanks to our source who has access to the unreleased Pixel 6 Pro, XDA can offer an exclusive first look at Live Translate through some screenshots of the feature.

Pixel 6 Pro next to 18W charger
Exclusive: Pixel 6 Pro regulatory label shows Google is finally upgrading charging speeds

Regulatory labels for the Pixel 6 Pro have leaked, and they confirm that the next Pixel phone will finally have faster charging speeds.

By

The next Pixel phone won't charge as slowly as previous models. Starting with the original Pixel in 2016, Google has shipped an 18W USB-C charger in the box with each Pixel phone. Google, like Apple and Samsung, has been averse to shipping faster chargers, instead opting to stick with the same 18W USB PD charger year after year. That will likely change this year with the launch of the Pixel 6 Pro, as XDA can confirm that at least one model supports 33W wired charging.

The next big update to Android is launching on October 4th according to a document reviewed by XDA. Android 12 will be the biggest Android OS update in years, bringing a complete redesign, a new theme engine, a one-handed mode, and much more. Because of how extensive the update is, it's possible that Google ran out of time to add one or more planned features, pushing those features to the next release. We recently learned that Android's next release could be a point update, but we weren't sure why at the time. Now, we've learned a bit more about the features planned for the presumed Android 12.1 update, and they involve several enhancements to the foldable phone experience.

Google Tensor chip
Exclusive: Here are the likely specs of the Google Tensor chip in the Pixel 6

The Google Pixel 6 series will be the first phones with the Google Tensor chip, Google's first-ever in-house mobile SoC. Here are its specs.

Ever since rumors arose that Google was developing its own chip for Pixel phones, one of the burning questions that we've been asked over and over again is: What are its specifications? Leak after leak have confirmed various tidbits about the Google Tensor chip, but none have confirmed details on the most important part: the CPU. A recent Geekbench listing purportedly from the Google Pixel 6 Pro sparked wild speculation online about the Tensor's CPU, and we can finally address some of those theories thanks to our source.

Apple may have just launched the iPhone 13 series today, but they're not the phones I'm most excited about this year. My attention is focused on the Google Pixel 6 series, of which the Pro model will be Google's first-ever ultra-premium flagship smartphone. The Pro model has it all: a high-resolution and high refresh rate display, a periscope zoom camera, a flagship-tier SoC, the latest Android 12 software, wireless charging, a sleek design, and more. Google itself revealed the most important details of the Pixel 6 lineup, but there's still some details left to be uncovered. Today, I received new information about the Pixel 6 Pro from a leaker who wishes to remain anonymous. Here's what I learned.

Here's our first look at Realme's upcoming MagDart charger and the Realme Flash. Check out the video to see it in action.

Apple launched a new MagSafe wireless charger with the launch of the iPhone 12 series last year. The charger made it easy for users to align the charging coil in their phones with the one in the charger, as it magnetically attached to the back of the phone in the correct location. While many Android phones support Qi wireless charging and some work with Apple's MagSafe charger, we're yet to see an Android OEM come out with a similar solution. However, that's set to change soon as Realme is working on a magnetic wireless charger called "MagDart."

Google Photos on a Samsung Galaxy S21
Exclusive: Android 12 may fix the most annoying part of using Google Photos on Samsung phones

Android 12 may finally crack down on Samsung, Xiaomi, and other companies changing where the Screenshots folder is located.

By

Samsung phones don't function too differently than other Android devices at this point, but Samsung does still modify a few aspects of the Android operating system leading to some annoying issues. For years, the company has saved screenshots to the DCIM folder, where only camera photos and videos are intended to be stored. This results in Google Photos, Dropbox, and many other photo backup services copying your screenshots whether you want them to or not. Thankfully, a fix could finally be on the way as part of Android 12.
